Chinese Gift Exchange

Time for the holiday office cheer. We found out a couple days ago about the party for our department. Along with the party, people were asked to participate in a Secret Santa. I don't think anyone wanted to do that, so today when we got the official invite to the shindig Secret Santa changed to Chinese Gift Exchange.

I'm going with the idea that this is racist and therefore not participating. Kate asked me if it would be ok if they called it White Elephant.

Ummm NO....still racist.

But now I am intrigued. What exactly are the rules of Chinese Gift Exchange. Am I supposed to bring my own Chinese? Will any Asian suffice?

I guess I'll find out on Monday. I hope I don't bring the same Asian as another person. I hate it when that happens.

Oooooohh. Racists. But I guess thats what you get when you live in a city thats over 70% white. (Thats whiter then Grand Rapids!)

I dont know for sure, but I suspect that a Chinese Gift Exchange is when you put all the presents in a pile, everyone draws a number, and then you pick presents in order of the number you drew. When its your turn you have the option of steeling an already open present or opening one from the pile. If you steel a present, the victim opens one from the pile.

First of all...you crack me up!

Is "Chinese" gift exchange the same as White Elephant? Because I've never heard it called that. In fact I haven't heard anything called "Chinese" style since I was old enough to wonder why things that different from the "normal" were referred to as "Chinese".

Also, how do you "steel" a present? Don't you have to have some sort of license to work that kind of machinery?
